How Couponing Works

by admin on November 26, 2011

Learning how to CouponWith the new season of the Extreme Couponing show, there’s also a renewed interest in learning how to coupon. If you’re just starting to coupon and want to learn more about it, you’ve come to the right place.

The degree you use couponing to build your wealth and savings, will depend on how much time and effort you put into learning about it. I look at couponing as a life skill. When you spend time learning to coupon, you are gaining valuable knowledge that will serve you and your family for years to come.

If you’ve ever wondered how couponing works, it’s actually pretty simple:

  • Stores have sales.
  • Manufacturer’s issue coupons.
  • Stores and manufacturer’s work together to decide which items will go on sale that match up to the coupons that are being issued to get shoppers into the store.
  • Couponers (that’s you and me), find, clip and organize multiple coupon inserts, and multiples of the same coupons.
  • We then save our coupons until a sale comes up where we can get the product for free or for pennies on the dollar.

Just as with any new subject that we study and learn, the challenge is in the details. Some of you will be content to find deals on blogs and use them to save some money. Others will want to learn all about couponing in order to put your own deals together and learn a new skill.

I like to take advantage of both methods by learning everything I can about couponing and  also following deals on the blogs. Taking the time to learn about couponing, and all its in’s and out’s, has helped me to spend less on consumable items. You can look at it as supplementing your income – and I call that pretty exciting!!

One of the first things you will want to do is to start gathering coupons. Since you’ll be gathering a lot of coupons, you will need a place to store and organize them. You can find more info on how to do that here.

Stay tuned for more about the basics of couponing and also information on online classes to be held soon!

Hope you’re having a wonderful holiday weekend. Keep it safe and sane.

Run to Feed the Hungry Thanksgiving Day

by admin on November 7, 2011

Run to Feed the Hungry Thanksgiving Day 2011

The 18th Annual Run to Feed the Hungry event will take place in Sacramento on
Thanksgiving morning, November 24th, 2011. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services.

The couponing community is well known for its generosity when it comes to donations of food and other items for those in need. Let’s show our support for this special event by participating in one or more ways:

1. Join the event and run the race!
2. Donate to the event
3. Volunteer to help

The event is expected to attract 27,000 participants this year. Every $1 that is donated provides $10 in services and food to a needy individual or family in the Sacramento community.

If you have food donations from your stockpile that you would like to donate, please contact the Sacramento Food Bank at (916) 456-1980.

Thank you for contributing to those in need.

Rite Aid: $20 when you spend $100 update

by admin on October 15, 2011

Rite Aid Offers

I’ve been shopping at Rite Aid this month working hard to get my spending (before coupons!) up to $100 in order to get the $20 +up reward. I couldn’t figure out how to see how much was spent so far, so I called Rite Aid customer service. They have a special URL setup to see how much you’ve spent towards the $100.

To see your balance or if you’ve reached the $100 yet, go here.

This offer runs through October 31st so you still have plenty of time to participate. Don’t miss out on this +up reward! On top of the sales and any other +up rewards you are earning, your dollars spent (before coupons) are tracking toward this additional $20!

Participating stores that we know about in Sacramento are:

4830 J Street and 2211 F Street.

To find a participating store in your area, I recommend calling the Rite Aid Customer Service line at (1-800-748-3243).

If you are new to Rite Aid, be sure to sign up for the Wellness Card. You can sign up online or at any Rite Aid store. You will also want to take advantage of Rite Aid’s other customer rewards programs including, Single Check Rebates, Video Values, and Allergy Rewards Program.

To see this week’s full ad, go here.

Happy hunting!

CVS: Deals 10-9 to 10-15

by admin on October 10, 2011

CVS: Deals and Matchups

The drug stores seem to be giving stuff away this week! Even with these good deals, I want to remind you to keep a close eye on the amount that you are out of pocket. Remember that when you put out cash, get the product, and receive extrabucks — you’re still out of pocket the cash. This will be true unless you offset the OOP with coupons.

Our goal is always to pay the least amount out of pocket by stacking coupons, extrabucks, coupons from the red coupon machine, in-ad coupons, whatever you can muster. Get the product, and receive extrabucks back, too! And if we’re lucky, we end up with some money makers! I love getting paid to shop!

If you’re new to CVS, you will need to sign up for the extracare card in order to get the best prices in the store. Also, when you visit CVS, make sure you scan your CVS card in the red coupon machine for even more coupons and savings! You can sign up for your extracare card online or at any CVS store. Rite Aid: Deals 10-9 to 10-15

by admin on October 10, 2011

RiteAid: Deals & Matchups

There are so many free items at Rite Aid this week! Get your coupons together and head over there! If you live in Sacramento, be sure to shop at one of the Rite Aid’s that’s offering the $20 +up when you spend $100. This offer is good through 10-31-2011. Your purchases will be tracking toward that $100 total until the 31st. The two locations that are offering this deal are: 2211 F Street and 4830 J Street, both in Sacramento, CA. There may also be others that you know of. Ask your Rite Aid if they are participating in this deal. If not, go to one that is.

If you are new to Rite Aid, be sure to sign up for the Wellness Card. You can sign up online or at any Rite Aid store. You will also want to take advantage of Rite Aid’s other customer rewards programs including, Single Check Rebates, Video Values, and Allergy Rewards Program.

To see the full ad, go here.

Here are the matchups:

$15 +Up Rward when you buy $50 worth of Loreal Cosmetics. You must spend the $50 before 10-29-2011 for this deal. Your purchases of Loreal will be tracking in the background until you reach the $50, and then your $15 +up will print out. Keep in mind that the $50 is after your Rite Aid discount and before coupons.

If you’re working to get to the $50 in one trip, the sale this week is Buy 1, get 50% off the second item for Loreal. The second item rings up at the 50% off price. Be sure to have the cashier give you a subtotal so you know if you’re reached the required $50 to get your +up reward. Trust me – this causes issues at the register. I like to have a buffer item just in case. If I don’t need it, then I just have them put it back.

Also, what you spend on this Loreal deal will be tracking toward the $20 +up when you spend $100 that I mentioned above. Love these double dippin’ deals!!

Newspaper Inserts - What if they are missing? I had a couple of people write in on the weekend about news stand copies of the Sac Bee with no inserts.

I have one subscription to the Sac Bee that gets delivered and then I go to Dollar Tree to get the rest of my papers on Sunday. All the inserts were in the papers that I bought this weekend.

There are many reasons why the news stand papers could be missing their inserts, including but not limited to:

  1. Someone took them out of the papers.
  2. The Bee ran out of inserts and didn’t put them in, or they only put one when there should have been two, for example.

If you find that the papers are missing inserts, I suggest calling the Sacramento Bee directly. Please don’t buy any papers without first checking that the inserts are in the papers you are purchasing. Yes, this means you will have to stand there and check every paper. But isn’t that better than getting home to find that you’re missing some of them?

The number for the Sac Bee is: (916) 321-1000.

Thanks to those of you that wrote in about this.

$0.25/1 Clorox Bleach, exp. 10/16/11 (SS 08/21/11)
Final price $1.50 each

Lots of things in the Target ad are listed at a certain price when you buy so many of the item. Keep in mind that unless the ad specifically states you must buy the amount shown to receive the price shown, that you can break down the price on a per item basis to buy one or more if you’d like.

For example, this week the Clorox bleach is listed as “4 for $7″. You can buy one bottle of the Clorox for $1.75 and use the $.25/1 coupon to get it for $1.50. You do not have to purchase 4 bottles of bleach to get the sale price.

Well, it looks like I’ll be making a coupon run or two this week. I am getting close to being out of cleaning supplies so I’m glad to see some on sale that we have coupons for. My stockpile is low on a few items like light bulbs and batteries. I’m waiting for the sales on batteries that we’ll start seeing for Halloween, and that will get even better when Christmas gets closer.

Have a great week!

Rite Aid: Deals 9-25 to 10-1

by admin on September 25, 2011

RiteAid: Deals & Matchups

Just a few things at Rite Aid this week. The Optic White toothpaste is still a good deal at $.49 cents after coupons and +up rewards and we’ve got a money maker on some Crest toothpaste. So head on over with your coupons.

I’ve noticed on my last two coupon runs to Rite Aid that they have been running out of sale items before the sale is off. This is unusual for Rite Aid in my experience. Luckily, they are quick to give you a rain check for the items they’re out of. So if you find that you’re going after a deal and they are sold out, be sure to ask for a rain check!
